The Dangers Of Sleep Deprivation

New York City may be the city that never sleeps, however that may not be a good thing. After numerous studies and research programs it has been concluded that the importance of sleep can not be stressed enough.

Time and time again it has been shown that people who get seven hours or more of sleep each night are less likely to be over weight than those who get less than seven hours. This contributes to the fact that almost a third of the population is overweight. Studies reveal that losing just a few hours of sleep over a period of only a few days can lead to an uncontrollable appetite with increased cravings and weight gain.

Habitual sleep deprivation can lead to more serious problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure diabetes, and of course weight gain. It can also have an effect on appearance, proneness to sickness and disease, depression, and overall decrease in energy level. Studies done with groggy, tired drivers also show that sleep deprivation and reaction time are related.
Some tips on getting a good night’s rest include the following:

Don’t drink before bed. Even though you may think you need a night cap to fall asleep, consuming alcohol before bedtime can have the opposite effect on sleep patterns. Alcohol can actually interfere with getting a full quality sleep.

Stay away from caffeine. While coffee may get you going in the morning, it is likely to disrupt sleep at night. Since caffeine is a stimulant, avoiding the drink after breakfast time is a wise choice. It is also a good idea to stay away from a diet pill that contains caffeine or other stimulants. If you are on a diet pill for weight loss, it is wise to look for one with out any stimulants; a good choice would be one that contains pure hoodia gordonii.

Take away distractions. Finally, getting a good nights sleep means getting rid of distractions such as the television and radio. To induce an atmosphere of rest, it should be dark and quite as well as a comfortable temperature.
